What’s the Issue?

Time:  45 minutes

Standards:  Common Core ELA and CASEL

Through the use of hexagonal thinking, students will make connections to the articles of the UDHR or to one of the SDGs. Hexagonal thinking will help to narrow the students’ scope to one article or one goal, which will then allow them to identify a specific issue and call to action that will be at the center of their creative action campaigns.

After this lesson, students will be able to...

  • identify the human rights issue they feel most compelled to highlight through the use of art or media.
  • describe why this human rights issue compels them to act.
  • envision themselves as creative changemakers who act as a megaphone to tell a story that they feel must be shared.

Guiding Questions

  • What human rights issues am I compelled to learn more about?
  • Why do I want to learn about these specific issues?
  • Why do I want to take action and how can I be a megaphone to tell the story?
