LESSONS I–VI

  • Lesson I • Stories Connect Us

Our Creative Changemakers team doesn’t claim to be experts on any issue. We do, however, believe in the spirit of inquiry and learning beside our students. So, when the topic of refugees and migrants came to us, we decided the best way to learn about it was to enter the gateway of learning along with our students.

Come along with us as we explore the journeys taken by millions of people as they flee their dangerous home countries in pursuit of refuge in a foreign land.

  • Lesson II • Exploration Before Action

That last lesson was fun and gave us much to think about. We still wonder why Malak’s journey is “from” somewhere, not “to” somewhere. Usually, when people go on trips, the focus is on going to a place, not leaving. We also wonder where she is headed. Lastly, it would help to know why Malak and her family left Syria. We realize that our questions, and most likely yours as well, can only be answered by learning more about the country of Syria.

  • Lesson III • Journeys

So, in the first two lessons, we learned a lot about Malak and Syria. As usual, the more we learn, the more we want to know! One of the things that really stands out to us is how perilous Malak’s journey was. It strikes us that in an effort to get somewhere safe, refugees like Malak have to put themselves in great danger.  We need to broaden our view and look at what it means to be a refugee.

  • Lesson IV • What Is Home?

Let’s consider what it means to call a place your home. In Lesson 3, our inquiry focused on Malak’s journey. Now we are ready to consider what happened to Malak once her journey ended and she found herself in her new home.

Remember that Malak is our context for learning. When we learn about Malak, we also learn about the experiences of many other Syrian refugees.

  • Lesson V • Your Own Exploration

Over the course of the first four lessons, we guided you in the process of inquiry as we explored Malak’s journey as well as the journey of other refugees.

Together, we generated questions and found their answers through the process of research and discovery. We learned a lot, but we did not learn everything.

Now, we invite you to embark on an inquiry process of your own to find the information that you still need to increase your understanding of what it means to be a refugee.

  • Lesson VI • Taking Creative Action

At Creative Visions, we believe that change can be made by using the power of storytelling. And we believe stories can be told by anyone by using any creative expression. In other words, you can change the world through art and media.

Think about all the short films you watched during your explorations in the previous five lessons. Think about the letters you read and the photographs you saw. All of them told stories, and all of them connected you a little bit more to people whom you have never met.

Now, it’s time for you to become a storyteller by using your creativity.
